For many Texas landowners, improving a property often means balancing priorities. Brush management, cedar clearing, fuel reduction, and wildfire mitigation projects can provide tremendous long-term benefits, but the cost can sometimes delay action.
The Texas A&M Forest Service Mechanical Fuel Reduction Grant offers eligible landowners an opportunity to receive reimbursement for approved projects designed to reduce wildfire risk and improve the safety of rural properties. Applications are currently being accepted through July 14, 2026, making now the time to determine whether your property qualifies.
What Is the Mechanical Fuel Reduction Grant?
The Mechanical Fuel Reduction Grant is a cost-share reimbursement program funded through the USDA Forest Service and administered by the Texas A&M Forest Service. The program is designed to help landowners reduce hazardous vegetation that can contribute to wildfire spread and threaten homes, structures, and surrounding communities.
The goal is simple: create safer properties and more resilient landscapes while helping reduce wildfire intensity and improve firefighting access.
What Types of Projects Qualify?
Eligible projects focus on reducing hazardous vegetation through mechanical methods, including:
- Creating defensible space around homes and structures
- Establishing fuel breaks
- Removing ladder fuels that allow fire to move from grasses into trees and brush
- Reducing dense vegetation using chainsaws, hand-cutting equipment, chippers, forestry mulchers, or masticators
Priority is generally given to treatments within 100 feet of homes and structures, although projects may extend up to 300 feet when appropriate.
How Does Reimbursement Work?
Landowners must hire an independent contractor to complete approved work. Once the project has been completed and inspected according to program requirements, eligible expenses may be reimbursed through the grant program.
Current reimbursement rates may provide up to:
- $750 per acre for hand-cutting treatments
- $2,000 per acre for heavy equipment treatments such as forestry mulching
- $1,500 per acre for combination treatments
Who Is Eligible?
The program is available to qualifying landowners located within designated eligible counties identified by Texas A&M Forest Service. Landowners should review the official eligibility map and program requirements to determine whether their property qualifies before applying.
Why This Matters for Texas Landowners
Wildfire risk remains a growing concern across much of Texas. Dense brush, cedar encroachment, and accumulated vegetation can create conditions that allow fires to spread quickly across rural landscapes.
Creating defensible space around homes, barns, and other improvements is one of the most effective steps a landowner can take to help protect both property and people. Fuel reduction projects can also improve access for emergency responders while contributing to healthier and more manageable landscapes.
Apply Before July 14
If you’ve been considering brush management, cedar clearing, fuel reduction, or wildfire mitigation work on your property, this grant opportunity may help offset a portion of those costs.
Applications for the Texas A&M Forest Service Mechanical Fuel Reduction Grant are open through July 14, 2026. Landowners interested in participating should review program requirements and submit their application before the deadline.
